I pulled a CSOB move. Instead of adding one to my IIGS, I bought a
pizza box Mac which has a drive built in. When I need to, I can use Mac
disks, PC disks or ProDos disks in the Mac, and then transfer files to
the IIGS via Appletalk. A little slower and more cumbersome, but
definitely cheaper.
Here, here. That's the same thing that I do. I find that a desktop Power Mac
G3 (the one with built-in serial ports) fits the bill quite nicely and
frequently serves as an AppleShare server for the IIgs.
If I were to get a 3.5" disk system, it would definitely be for the IIe. I'm
fine with 800k disks on the IIgs. I managed to squeeze System 6 and
Marinetti onto one!

Alternatively, if you have a CFFA/Microdrive/Focus, you can get an IDE-
to-CompactFlash converter off eBay (really cheap) and mount the CF
card externally. By having external access to the CF card, you can
easily remove the CF card from the Apple II and use Ciderpress and a
card reader in a PC. Doing this you can copy files directly onto the
CF card which eliminates the need for floppy disks or an Appletalk
connection. This is *much* faster than any other solution I am aware
of. You can easily copy entire hard disk images, or individual files
onto the CF card with a few simple clicks and then stick the CF card
back into the Apple and away you go.
That's how I do things anyhow. :-)
