Yes, this is true, but I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.
I was discussing the advantages of continuing to use Binary II
wrappers on ShrinkIt and GSHK archives so I don't see where this comes
into play. :-/
However, I have not had a problem with Spectrum. Even on my
non-accelerated IIgs, I get loss-less connections at 38400 without
shift booting and get transfer rates over 2000 cps between my IIgs and
my 486 with this setup. The biggest slow down for transfers on my
IIgs is the slowness of my hard drive (AMR 60 MB with what seems to be
a really old CMS SCSI card).
I get loss-less 57600 connections if I shift booting.
If I had an accelerator, which I would dearly love to get, then I
wouldn't have to shift boot at all and my transfer rates would
probably increases slightly as well. Add a RAMfast or Apple HS SCSI
card and it would increase again.
Finally, yes, a ProDOS 8 communications program will usually run
faster than a IIgs desktop program but there is a point where it will
no longer make a difference. After all, 57600 bps is the fastest ANY
program will be able to send data out from the computer no matter
whether the program is just waiting for the serial port to be ready
(P8 program) or handling interrupts from inits, CDEVs, NDAs, et al
(GS/OS program).
