   First, check the basics. Are both sides set to the same speed, same
settings (8n1, or 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit is quite common and
used), same options? [Disable hardware handshaking on both sides if
the cable doesn't support it; speeds under 19200 can usually go fine
without that] 

   Well, given that you say you already have a null modem cable,
that's fine. However, if this is a Super Serial Card, if you're
already using it with a printer, then the card is probably also set
for null modem, and the two null modems cancel each other out. [You
need an odd number of null modems between the two]

   So, one thing to try is reducing the null modems by one. If your
existing printer cable will fit, try using that. Or, on the SSC, the
jumper block (with the arrow on it) should be flipped.
