I've got a //e here that had the previous owner's ID code painted on it
with enamel paint, and I have also had to remove permanent marker.  What I
generally do is to remove the guts from the machine so that I don't have
to worry about frying anything.  Then, I have had the best luck using
Windex (or some variation thereof) on the case parts.  Many years ago, I
used Fantastik spray (is that stuff still around?) to remove permanent
marker.  The truth is, there is very little that is truly permanent...
