There should be a couple of aiming magnets on the back of the picture
tube. It is possible that one of them has fallen off and is now rolling
around in the case someplace. But these magnets are usually attached to a
ring on the back of the tube, and you can rotate that to fix the problem.
Those are usually secured with a drop of paint.

The basic precaution is to shut the power off and, with the unit plugged
in to a grounded outlet, ground out everything to the chassis. Or unplug
the unit and ground everything to ground. (probably better). Time is your
friend as well; I believe someone (Rubywand, I think) posted a fairly
complete set of safety tips for working on CRTs some time ago...I think it
was relative to a common GS monitor repair...you might check DejaNews...
