The OS is still copyrighted; only those officially licensed to do
can do so legally. [And why would folks want to associate with the
slimier-than-thou?] Alltech Electronics (http://www.allelec.com,
760-724-2404) sells GS System 6.0.1 for $7.95 on 6 disks, a most
reasonable price. That does require a ROM 01 machine with at least one
MB of memory to do anything useful. If you've only got 256K or 512K,
then you're a victim of Apple's selling the machines with not enough
RAM to be useful as anything more than a fast color //e. You could
still buy the Apple II System Disk v4.02 and use that.

Turn it on and look at the very first screen. It'll say either ROM
version 01, 3, or nothing. If nothing, you have rom version 00,
another buggy product from Apple that'll need to be replaced (Alltech
above also sells ROM upgrade chips) before you can run anything
recent.
