[thread tangent alert!]
After I was just posting my last posting I took a good look at Nathan's
sig, and was interested to read his declared copyright. And it got me to
wondering about copyrights in general. As I mentioned in another article,
the matter of copyrights in regards to news posting is very shady, and I'd
some people's opinions on the matter.
Are these so-called copyrights in sigs really valid (ie. are they so-called
or are they legitimite). For example, I remember seeing some sigs saying that
the associated articles were copyrighted and could be distributed on MSDN
without MSDN paying the author $500. Is that legally valid?
My own opinion is that trying to apply copyright ownership to a news posting
is about as ridiculous as you can get. Posting something is somewhat
analagous to chatting with someone, and then trying to claim copyright
on your discussion.
I did hear that exact problem mentioned in conjunction with the US at one
stage. As I recall, they were trying to make Internet postings become
copyrightable automatically rather than 'public domain'. Does anyone know
what came of this?
