But you can just drag over any extensions or libraries that Office needs,
without needing to re-install the software or edit anything. And MS Office
is an extreme case, since it (gee, surprise, considering who makes it...)
installs a ton of it's own garbage in the System Folder. The vast majority
of Mac applications don't - they'll run fine with the default set of
system extensions.
In fact, I sometimes run applications that happen to reside on a server,
without a second thought (other than network performance). And if I want
the app on my machine, I can almost always just copy the app itself
(without any of it's supporting files) and run it with no problem. I can
also move it to any directory at any time, and it will still run, and
documents will still cause it to launch. In fact, if I double click a
document for which I don't have the application, it will open without a
hitch if the needed app resides on a server that I happen to be connected
to. Also, I can reinstall or update the operating system without touching
any of the apps.

So buy a 2-button mouse. I personally use one with four buttons. But it's
true, I wish they'd offer them bundled with the system, at least as an
option.
