Transfer of gif files

My uncle uses an IBM; he has sent me one or two scanned family photos by 
first translating them to gif files. I'm able to download these, use 
Super Convert to translate them into SHR pix and can then use them in my 
Apple II GS.

But if I try to do the same, ie scan my photos, use Super Convert to make 
them into gif files then send them to my uncle, all he gets is graffiti.

Can anyone suggest why this doesn't work? Have we misunderstood the 
purpose of the gif format? Appreciate any suggestions.
