Please read the comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html section 2.6 on the IIGS.
Basically, the first 50,000 or so GSs shipped had a signature on the
case. However, what was inside the cases was buggy and had to be
upgraded/expanded before you could run any modern GS software. [Apple
pulled a bait-and-switch on customers, shipping beta hardware and
software and requiring them to purchase RAM upgrades and fix the ROMs
before the systems were usable to do what they were advertised for.]

Some collectors may like having the signature on the case, but if
you want a system usable as more than a fast color //e, the ROM 00 GS
needed serious help. There's instructions in the FAQ to help you
determine what's in the case, and give you a better idea of the
usefulness of the system.
