Mice and the IIgs

I scanned through the FAQs and didn't see this addresses:

I was recently given an Apple IIgs (ROM 01, 512k RAM, color monitor) that
"locks up" when I boot the System Utilities disk that came with it.  Actually,
two came with it.. version 3.1 and 5.x and neither work.

The system boots (off the 3.5" drive, no HD) and comes up in the Finder but
the mouse will not move from the corner.  If I put a disk in it is mounted so
the program is still running.  There is a faint "click" coming from the
computer at this time.

I _know_ the mouse works because the IIgs Tour disk uses it without trouble.

Any ideas?

While I'm at it.. what is the most highly recommended SCSI card for the IIgs?
