I can make one other suggestion in addition to the other replies I've
seen so far.

My ImageWriter II has never worked reliably with a colour ribbon.  There
is a small motor and gearing arrangement which adjusts the vertical
position of the ribbon (rotating it up and down) to select colours.  On
my printer, this mechanism usually gets stuck, resulting in the wrong
colour being selected.

There is a tensioning adjustment on this mechanism: you might need to
play around with it to get the selection mechanism working.

(I haven't tried using colour for the last few years, and my printer is
on its last legs now, so I'll be buying a new one in the near future.)
