Yep.

I believe it stands for GNU Zip, and has nothing to do with PK Zip.
gz is a single-file compression format, so if ya wanna shove a buncha
files in a .gz, you'll hafta use TAR or something like that.

Yes, AFAIK, both. I've seen (but never used) an Apple // program
called GZ2PK (which converts .gz -> .zip), and there's at least 2
un-.ZIPping programs for the //e. One of which is called Angel, and
the other one's obvoius, like ZIP or UNZIP or something like that.
GZIP, GUNZIP, and Winzip (PC programs, the first 2 are also available
for Unix, I guess) all decompress .gz files.
