If you can order from overseas, Alltech Electronics
(http://www.allelec.com, look under Apple II then Chips & ROMs--
they've got two things listed at $29 and $39; not sure of the
difference, but either should work) has the ROM upgrade chip you'll
need to go from a ROM 00 to 01.
Without upgrading a 256K ROM 00, you're right, it is essentially a
fast color //e. Sure, Apple later sold a *usable* computer, but they
really sold underpowered machines at first. [Does this count as a
'bait & switch' effort? Advertising something then turning around and
saying "oh, you'll need to upgrade the ram and ROM before you can
really take advantage of any of the features you bought this for"
isn't too kosher in the FTC's books.]
