    No reason you need an accelerator? I can think of one, your likely
to start losing characters on screen if you connect at 28.8K or higher
with a stock 2.6 MHz IIgs. I'd recommend using an accelerator if your
going to work with anything higher than 14.4K, but your right in that
the modem will still operate without one (assuming you have a hardware
handshaking cable). I should have said "to properly use..." to have 
been more clear.
