With most Apple II parallel interfaces, you can't--reading from the
I/O addresses just returns garbage.
In fact, I once used a parallel interface (the Tymac PPC-100) where reading
from the I/O addresses not only returned garbage, it also transmitted a
copy of that garbage to the printer. I've never tried it with other cards,
but it wouldn't suprise me if many of them behave the same way.
