    Actually, all Apple IIgs's (regardless of ROM revision; 00, 01, 3)
can handle up to 57.6K through either serial port. I'm not sure if an
accelerator is required, but it certainly helps in the case of a modem
greater than the speed you mention above.

    I use a null-modem connection between my IIgs and PC and always set
it to 57600 with no problems (sometimes I have to shift-boot though, as
background interrupts can muck things up). I used to think this was fast,
at least until I saw two PC's null-modeming between each other, at about
115.2K or 230.4K! :)
