I've never seen the former card with less than 1 MB installed, so I'm
not sure which sockets are used, but I think it is more likely to be
this card (the IIgs card has its RAM chips adjacent for each 256K).

This is definitely true for the IIgs memory expansion card.

I would expect that the standard slot card _will_ work with 768K
installed, because it has its own custom hardware for accessing the RAM
through an access register.

The limitation on the IIgs card is due to simplified memory decoding
hardware that causes a hole or echo in memory if 768K is installed,
which is not detected by the IIgs Memory Manager when it determines the
RAM size.  The IIgs thinks it has more memory than is actually
installed, and it crashes when it tries to use the imaginary memory.

[By the way: it would be much easier answering your postings if you used
software that correctly implemented the "References" field in the header
- your followups are always detached from the earlier articles in
thread.  I had to re-edit this message because I didn't see your later
