The serial cable you mention sounds like someone hacked it, so it may very
well be no good. I would expect you'll need a null-modem cable, or at
least a converter to connect to your PC.
I distribute a disk for $3.00 with various Apple II telecom apps and
utilities which may prove useful in your attempt to download to your Apple
IIc.
