Welcome. Please read the comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) which was posted to this newsgroup two days ago, and is also
available for reading at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html

Apple's ftp site, ftp.apple.com. The latest release is System
6.0.1; you'll need to make sure you're running on at least a ROM 01
with 1-1.25MB RAM (HD helps a lot). System 6.* comes on 6-7 disks, not
just System disk and system tools. As mentioned in the FAQ, section
9.1 "Where can I get System 6, and what fixes are there for the known
bugs in it?" the disks are available in Apple II format at
ftp://ftp.apple.com/dts/aii/sys.soft/gs.system.6.0.1/ [And see the
FAQ, section 5.* for downloading instructions.

As long as your Mac is running any recent (6.* definitely, 5.*
probably), see the FAQ, section 5.* for downloading instructions. If
you feel that your Mac's 3.5" drive can write 800K disks properly such
that Apple IIs can read them (a lot of people have reported problems),
you may want to try downloading System 6.0.1 in Mac diskcopy format
from
ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Apple_II/Apple_IIGS_System_6.0.1/
[Yes, that line is >80 columns. Moderation in naming is a good thing]
