No way!  My Japanese version of the Epson LQ800 printer has something 
like 4000 characters in it.  1400 sounds way too low.

Actually they have two parallel alphabets but neither of these REPLACE 
the Chinese styled characters that they also use.  Each has a different 
purpose.  To be educated you have to know all three (I believe 2000 of 
the characters is average.)
