FAQ, also available at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html If
you have a plain vanilla limited edition GS, you've got essentially a
fast color //e (Apple didn't have its act together on the GS for years
after its initial release) until you manually upgrade it.

   The best way to check it is to turn it on and see what's displayed
on the screen. "Apple IIgs" is printed at the top of the screen, and
if you do not have any info on a ROM version at the bottom, you have
the original GS ROM 00 release.

   If you have a ROM 00 GS, then please ignore everything said by
Scott Gamon in his recycled and wrong posting elsewhere in this
thread.  Scott's got problems with facts and the truth (mainly lacking
in a lot of details that'll bite you, as he tends to assume everyone
is just like him, which ought to be clear to him that he's dead wrong).

   Basically: a ROM 00 GS will NOT run GS/OS and most of the latest GS
software. [Took many flames to get Scott to acknowledge this a while
back, and how quickly it's forgotten] Fortunately, that is a curable
condition-- Alltech Electronics (see section 10.2 of the FAQ) sells a
ROM 00 -> 01 upgrade chip that you can drop in to make your GS
functional. You'll also probably need to have at least 1MB RAM in your
GS before you even think about running GS/OS or the latest programs;
see the FAQ for upgrading details.
