II GS & Extended Keyboard II?

I've recently acquired a II GS (UK Model, ROM 01), and am trying to
use it with an Extended Keyboard II. However, on bootup it produces a
continuous stream of characters until a key is pressed, after which it
works as expected, except that the 's' key does not work. Is there a
compatibility problem, or is there a problem with my II GS? If it's
the latter, how do I fix it?
