The Apple IIgs, unlike the IIe, has a built in synthesizer sound
chip of the kind used in the Mirage and ESQ-1 synthesizers popular
in musician circles in the '80s. In order to play MIDI files on
the IIgs, all you need is a program to do it. One such program
that is still being sold is Music Composer.

What you want to do is to connect external speakers to the GS first
because the internal one sucks. There is a port in the back of
the GS that accomodates a stereo headphone jack. Plug your speakers
in there. Some GS also have amplified output via a card and in
that case you would connect the speakers there.

Music Composer is available from Effective Software Solutions,
Clayburn Juniel III's company. I forgot the web address, maybe
someone else can provide it.
