I've had a very similar problem.  First, you need to know what the
internal diagnostics say (press control + closed apple + reset).  If it
says KERNEL OK, then I would suspect the drives.  If you get an error
message such as "RAM:F13 F12 F11 F10 F9 F8 F7 F6", then the problem is
not in the drives or the controller.  I suspect it is the RAM, but the
way I solved my problem was to bring the computer back and get a
replacement, since I had just bought it from a used computer sale.
