The amount of picture lost to 'overscan' is highly TV dependent--
what's centered on one may be off to the side on another, etc. NTSC
video is already famous for 'Never Twice the Same Color' from one TV
to the next, and this overscan problem doesn't help it much either.
When working on a SGI with a D1 digital NTSC I/O system, maximum
screen coverage was 720x486, but at least 30-40 pixels on the sides
could be lost on most TVs, and probably 15-25 pixels along the top and
bottom. [Of course, the $x,000 production TV that could crunch in the
screen to show overscan was real handy :]
