Well, the excuse (works for me; I do the same thing) is that all
the Apple engineers (and supposedly also beta testers) left the System
folder on their desktop, where the 'magic routing' always works
perfectly, regardless of auxtype.
I leave a few folders of aliases on my desktop (thanks to Richard
Wifall's EasyOpen addon-- they're apps that hand off execution), plus
the system folder. But, I also have a few aliases for my shell prompt
provided by GNO/ME that I usually boot into, saving me the bother of
point and clicking. [The top 15 programs I uses are all accessible by
typing their name and pressing return... nicer and faster than the
Finder]
