I don't think that's specific to HFS...  that's what the Disk Cache is for. 
It's also the stated reason you're supposed to use the Shut Down command
instead of just turning your computer off.  If you don't want to have that
problem, go into the graphical Memory control panel and set your disk cache
to 0K. (zero)
