Robert, the Apple IIGS does not use (MS)DOS. Further,
Win95 no longer has a real MS-DOS in the case of the PC
(it just has a "shell" that pretends to be DOS). The
Apple IIGS uses the GS/OS operating system, which can
access Mac HFS and MS-DOS volumes as well as ProDOS,
use TrueType fonts (with right software), generate
Postscript, and yes it has a Finder.
With enough memory (4MB-8MB), a fast modem (14.4k or
above), an Apple IIGS makes a good fax machine, word
processor, desktop publisher, C or Pascal teacher,
spreadsheet or database, or hypertext (HyperCard/HyperStudio)
machine and you can surf the net with it too.
Some schools are stupid, which is a crime since most
K-12 students lack typewriters.
FYI, in the LA area, where schools cling to their
computers, they seem to be worth MUCH more than $2.

Where do you get 'command lines' from? The GS has an extremely easy to
use Finder (very Mac-like) and is fast when using a Transwarp or Zip
accelerator card. If you have a GS that a school never bothered to
upgrade to include the later available systems, there are sources to buy
system software and even download it from Apple.
You're thinking of AppleSoft Basic for the 8 bit when you talk of
command lines. Even the 8 bits have a GUI available for them. You can
find the Desktop program on many ftp sites.
