This message is a bit confusing (to me), but if you are talking about any
kind of file, including subdirectories, then ProDOS has a limit of, I think,
57 IN THE VOLUME DIRECTORY ONLY. I don't think that has ever changed, and
probably won't. I don't know what the limit is in
subdirectories, but I've never reached that limit. AppleWorks did (still
does?) have a limit on the number of files it can handle in a
subdirectory, but it's now quite large too.
