Help with mystery MLI error

All,

I'm well along in my efforts towards making Netatalk (free Unix-hosted
Appleshare server) work properly with an Apple //e.  However, when I
try accessing the server volume from anything other than the
"official" Apple utilities on the Appleshare IIe Workstation diskette,
an MLI error $88 occurs.  Unfortunately, this is absolutely
undocumented <grr>.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why Copy-II Plus and ProSel-8 are unable
to work with a volume that the Apple utility (and plain-old Basic) has
no trouble with?

Also, anyone have a copy of the AppleShare Programmer's Guide for the
Apple IIGS that they can part with or photocopy?  I'll be glad to pay
a few bucks for one.
