I have this problem as well. My first solution to this problem was to
simply stop double clicking text and word processing files in the
Finder. If I wanted to read a file, I would open ShadowWrite from the
Apple menu and load the file in manually. I've never had a hang when
using ShadowWrite this way.

I have since installed a Finder Extension that displays text and word
processing files when I double click on them in the Finder. It isn't
as nice as ShadowWrite but it gives me a quick and easy way to read a
file. If I want it to look nice or print it, I can still pull down
load it into ShadowWrite manually.
