II Plus Speaker setup...

I was given a II Plus today.  Upon close examination (and much needed
cleaning)
I noticed that the speaker placement seems to be a bit more "casual"
than what I am used to seeing in an Apple.  After a quick peek in the
manual, and examining the rather small photo of the mainboard, it
appears that the speaker is mounted facing up, surrounded by a
rectangular piece of soft sponge (dampening?) and appears to be affixed
to the base of the enclosure by a silicon sealant type material.  The
closest unit I can compare it to is an unenhanced IIe that uses two wire
bails to retain the speaker, and the speaker is facing down and contains
no damping material.  Was this the norm for the Plus?
Any input would be greatly appreciated, and an emailed answer would be
likewise appreciated.
