Except for downloads that aren't set on downloading (and that's
fairly pointless, as GSHK deals fine with opening any file with .SHK
at the end of the name), you shouldn't bother changing filetypes. The
filetype implies what formats the contents are in, and how the system
should deal with them. You lie to the system about the contents of a
file, of course it's not going to work.
Generic text and binary are dealt with by whatever application
handles them; they may or may not be able to deal with the contents.
Everything else is specific.
