Help! dead //c drive
I just got a //c, monitor, stand, powersupply, and extra drive for cheap,
but the drive(s) won't work. It is an original //c (result code was 255).
The internal drive spins on powerup, and just keeps spinning, all the time
the power is on. The drive light blinks on power-up and power-down, but
otherwise stays mostly dark with an occasional faint glow or flicker. The
head never moves. The external 3.5" drive (model M0130, no eject button),
only spins briefly on powerup, and according to the FAQ, shouldn't work
anyway. I can hit control-reset, and get a prompt, and type in basic
commands, so at least I'm not totally screwed here...
Any advice on how to determine what is hosed (drive and/or controller
chip(?)) and where to get a replacement?
Is it possible for me to get this Applecare service and get the thing
fixed?
How long ago did the "free upgrade" for old motherboards expire and what
are my chances of sneaking by with that (whether it solves this problem
or not).
If it is cost prohibitive to fix, are there places that'll let me trade
it in or will buy it for parts?
Thanks to all! I hope to blow the dust off all my 5 1/4's and relive
the good-ole-days if I get it working...
