Oh, I almost forgot -- there's also a variation you can try which is
akin to the childhood game of "Hide and go **** yourself" where you
make a branch along your path and backtrack to your original course,
such that the split-off path points to a large open part of the play
area with no other trail pointing to you.  The beetle following it
will reach the end and just keep going, and hopefully in a direction
entirely opposite of wherever you happen to be at that point and will
have to wander around randomly before finding your trail again.
