Re: Update on WordPerfect reclassification: shareware!

2-27-97

Concerning the shareware status of Word Perfect for the Apple II and IIGS,
please
note the following.

Today, via regular U.S. mail - forwarded to me from Scott G. and post
marked
from Industry, CA - 917 dated 2-25-97 - I received, what I conclude to be
the
original letter (contents noted below) for the authorization to release
Word Perfect for the Apple II and IIGS as shareware programs. Thanks so
much Scott, for your astute efforts, research, in finding the owner of the
programs, obtaining the letter of authorization and for sending it on to
me. : ) You've done a great service to the A2 Community!

Dear Mr. Gxxxx,

Thank you for your interest in our company. Quality Software no longer
publishes
for the Apple II market. All versions of WordPerfect for the Apple II and
WordPerfect IIGS may be distributed as shareware provided they are not
sold or
modified in any way. A small fee for the purpose of disk duplication only
is
acceptable. Quality Software will not provide technical support for these
products. Users must obtain copies of the products themselves because we
do not
have the equipment to duplicate the disks anymore. The user is free to
evaluate
the software for a period of 14 days. After this period, the user must
forward
the amount of $10 to us or cease to use the software. Please include a
text file
containing this information in the disks or archives that are distributed.

Sincerely,

Well, it looks like Scott G. has graciously provided the final part to
making
WordPerfect for the Apple II and IIGS legally available as shareware. I've
been
trying for many months, to help make this fine Apple II and IIGS program
available to the public legally and properly. Hopefully this will be the
final
part needed to allow its legal distribution as a shareware - as outlined
in the
terms of the above copy of the original letter from the owners of the
programs -
Quality Software!

I'm retaining the original for my records as proof. Should anybody care to
make
any additional varifications you have the name and address to write for
such.
I'm sending a photocopy of the original letter on to the Librarian of the
Ground
Apple2 ftp site - Steve Nelson. Then he should be able to make the
WordPerfect
archives available via Ground. I'll be providing a link to the archives,
the text
file review from Scott G. and any documentations that might be made
available for
the programs also - from the GS WorldView (NEW) web site soon, along with
the required text file notice.

Anybody wishing to provide any forms of program documentations as text
files,
etc. should certainly do so, as they see fit to provide them to the
public.

Another EXTRA SPECIAL thanks to Scott G. for making it all happen.

Enjoy and Cheers,
Tom
