I think the answer to this questioin is much simpler: it doesn't matter.

CS classes teach how to approach a certain problem and do not cover
platform-specific issues. You will learn how to develop algorithms and
structures.

Therefore, my recommendation is: get the development kit that is most enjoyable
or gives you the most bang for the buck if you're on a tight budget. Forme, the
ultimate choice was Metrowerks Codewarrior, but your mileage may vary.

On a related topic...even if you're getting your hands on a system that is not
the same as in school/university, don't worry. It'll be a big plus if you know
many different systems later on, even if it's giving you an extra headache in
the beginning. But - typically you will use ANSI stuff (almost identical on
every system) that is platform independant so your choice of platform is not
that much of an issue.
