Problems with GS' disk drives - help needed

I reinstalled the OS to the HD, and everything went fine. BUT, the 3.5"
drives won't work the right way. When I put in a disk, the icon doesn't
appear to the desktop.
However, I get somekind of a phantom disk. It's more like a ram-disk
inside the drive...
Should I install something? Do some slot changes?
Bonus-question: What is it when I intialize a disk and I should choose
between 4:1 or 2:1?
