probably some bad chip somewhere; I got good advice but can't stand the 
trauma of desoldering from the motherboard so I guess I'll live with it.
BTW, it was _not_ a "check spped & clean heads" solution;
someone joked they had received this advice as well & it maybe was a 
mania of csa2  ;-)
