Re: Piracy

Joe, posting the list seems like a good idea, but it isn't. The
information recorded by ftp servers is offered by the caller. It takes
very little to spoof it. All you have to do is ftp with the command flags
set to force by-hand login rather than the automatic acct:anonymous and
pass:your@e-mail.addr.

Besides, it'd take verifying the logs of the
callers' ISP's to determine if they were in fact on at that time. We know
you didn't edit the ftp logs -- but you can't PROVE that you didn't
without getting those verifications. And way too damn few ISP's will
assist in something like that. It's just low priority. Turley's ISP had
to do this verification before bumping him, or they risked getting in
trouble for doing it without *proof*.

A text file of anything sent over the net is not proof. Anyone can
write/edit anything. Trust me, I've been going at this for some time now.

BTW, the old reporting address for the FBI (nccs@fbi.gov) is now
disconnected. The publisher's group Software Publishers' Assn. will take
the info: piracy@spa.org. The FBI never did squat anyway unless they
could round up hundreds of names at once and make it a Big Night Out for
the agents.

I sympathize. Posting the list IS a good idea. Most of the info would
probably be true and correct. But as I said, you can't prove it with just
the list.
