Fast Eddie kicks ass! [was Re: Need Fast Eddie help]
Thank you Mr. Gudat of Brutale Deluxe (BTW, I loved your Columns GS game from a few
years back) for your help regarding Fast Eddie setup. The beta 2 update with its
buildrom program made extracting the ROM image from my 03 a cinch.
Boy was I thrilled to see FE try to boot up ProDOS and then giving the boink! unable to
load ProDOS error just as it does on the real thing! The added "eject volume" function
was a nice touch and after regaining my composure I proceeded to install System 6.0.1.
While I have high praise for FE and it was cool to see both my System 6 boot floppy and
the installer disks boot up just as they do on the real GS, I just can't get GS/OS
installed with it on my crappy PM 6100/66 within the alloted 15 min. demo period. I
understand the reason for the time limit but it kinda sucks that folks with slower PMacs
like me aren't given a fair chance to test drive this mama...
Anyway, floppy access is waaay slower than it is on my real GS which makes the install
process downright painful. I first created a coolmedia volume (1 ProDOS 32MB partition)
to turn into my GS/OS boot volume. The installer did not recognize the partition at
first so I had to initialize it in Finder (courtesy of the GS/OS boot floppy). But even
then, the next time I ran installer, while it did start installing GS/OS on to that
partition the whole thing froze while copying the ProDOS files... But even if it hadn't
crashed during the install process I doubt FE would have stuck around (due to time
limit) till the end anyway...
Before I committ to this project once again, I just wanted to verify that I was at least
going at this the right way. I get how you create volumes and mount/unmount em, but
exactly how do you create those disk images so that I can run the GS/OS install process
from files copied to the hard drive instead of having to do so directly from the floppy
disks?
I recommend for beta 3 an inrcease in the test period to a full half hour. It would also
help to have more detailed instructions on how to install System 6. The included docs
aren't bad, but too much space is devoted to discussions of ensoniq emulation here and
joystick support there -- features I don't particularly care too much for...
Other than these minor quibbles, I stand behind my contention that FE kicks ass! I plan
on supporting this baby all the way (who needs Gus - I don't need Apple's charity
anyway). With a quad-225 MHz 604 processor PMac this thing just might work as
efficiently as my real GS w/Zip GSX 9/32! Any suggestions y'all FE users out there have
regarding these matters would be much appreciated.
