Mac HFS is the hierarchical filing system (volumes with directories and/or
files). Macs with HD floppy drives and updated operatings systems recognize
Prodos and MS disks on insert. HD drives support 1.44 mb, 720K, 800K, and
perhaps the 400K format of the original Macs.
The GS can use 1.44 meg drives using the Superdrive controller card from Apple
(discontinued I believe) or the card from SHH in Germany. SCSI floppy drives
would be nice (pop a 1.44 or 800 K drive on the SCSI chain and bingo) since
things like Zip, Jaz, EZdrive, EZFlyer, and SyJet install just like that on
my 12 year old design GS. Alas, no SCSI floppy drives are available, except
for (possibly) the Insite Floptical, but I don't think it supports 800K.
