Re: Edhel finds DOS 3.3 speed-up (was DOS 3.3 versions)

The ProDOS equivalent isn't too hard to find...just start listing the
Disk II driver. It's pretty close to the start of the driver. But it
wouldn't be very meaningful for me to post its location, since its location
depends on which version of ProDOS you're using.
But you probably don't want to change it much, even if you do feel like
living dangerously...it turns out that ProDOS computes the delay using the
same routine that DOS 3.3 uses, and its motor-on delay is 232 ($E8), which
corresponds to about 0.6 sec. The delay value is the same in ProDOS 1.0.1,
1.1.1, and 2.0.3, and probably everything in between.
After all my griping about not messing with DOS 3.3's delay value of 216
($D8), this was a somewhat embarrassing discovery. I guess I'm going to
have to relax my opposition to shaving the delay time, on the grounds that
13 years' worth of successful ProDOS usage on disk drives all over the
world has proven that 232 is a safe delay value.
