As a long-time //c user, I can offer a pair of possible fixes. No
guarantee, but worth a try.
 
1.  Use a drive cleaner kit and clean the internal drive. May fix the
problem, but most likely, move to....
 
2.  Open the case and remove only enough stuff to get at the INTERNAL
power supply in the left rear area. Remove and clean the edge connector
strip on the power supply and the edge connector it plugs into. Put it
back together and try it. Those symptoms seem to indicate a corroded
connector.
