Do you have a GS?  Try formatting the disk on the powerbook and using it
as an HFS volume of the GS (with the HFS FST installed on a separate boot
disk).

IF this HFS volume is readable with all space and no errors, then your
partitioning software may be to blame.  If that is the case and you want
to use ProDOS, try doing your partitioning on the Mac (make 32MB volumes),
then doing a simple high level ProDOS format from the GS Finder.
