What is an Adaptive Peripherals card?

I found a IIe today which had a card in slot 4 made by a
company called Adaptive Peripherals. It was mostly composed
of chips on the one side and had a AA battery in a holder on
the back side. It had a ribbon cable running out the back to
a plastic box mounted to the side of the IIe. The plastic box
had a toggle switch with the labels SW1 and SW2. It had a red
LED light on it (power indicator?) and a Centronics style
connector.

Does anyone know what this card is? What connects to the 
Centronics connector? Does it require software to use? If
it is an interesting card I may go back and buy the computer.
