Hi there,
Joe Kohn had a good article on Lynx 2.6 in his latest SSII. It
was so good that I followed Joe's suggestion to use the open sites that
allow the use of 2.6 for those whose ISP or school doesn't currently use
it. 2.6 is pretty impressive, it makes the pages that once was pretty
unattractive much more presentable. Of course, it still doesn't
completely make up for the fact that pages that use frames still can't be
viewed with Lynx (for example http://www.examiner.com).
However, I was a little disappointed that San Francisco State
University did not offer use of 2.6 (I believe it was 2.4 that was being
used). So, I wrote the SFSU helpdesk, requesting maybe a potential switch
to 2.6. They replied that they would take my idea into consideration.
Usually that means, "sure we'll think about it, and then we'll just drop
the idea. End of story." But, today I was pleasantly surprised when I
went into Lynx, and that Lynx had been updated to 2.6 and I could use it
without using those open sites listed in SSII.
I don't know why SFSU did it, but I'm glad they did. Perhaps they
were convinced by my argument that still a lot of people use Lynx here.
Or maybe they saw that I still used a Apple II and figured I couldn't use
Netscape, so have some sympathy on the poor guy and update it for him and
others like him! ;)
So, perhaps others who wish they could use the newest version of
Lynx, should just inquire about it. You never know what might happen!
:)
