Bill,
Your answer is at the bottom of this mail that folks on GEnie got from
Gary. (utter@delphi.com)
I think that the $7/month Gary mentions can be considerably less if
you have an ISP and can telnet there. I think the fee is somewhere
around $36US/year. (Ask me in a day or so. I'm going to get of GEnie
before the end of the month and get on Delphi.)
======== Mail from Gary Utter ==========
Hi. My name is Gary Utter. You may remember me as the Chief Sysop of
the A2 RT for the past several years. I gave up that position (and my
GARY.UTTER account) back in September. It's now New Year's Eve, and
this is my last night on Genie. I've been on Genie for more than 8
years, and it pains me to leave it behind, but after much thought I've
decided that this is what I have to do. Luckily, I'm not alone, and I
have a new and better place to go.
I've moved to Delphi, and opened up some new Forums there, including
the A2 and A2Pro Forums. Many of the current A2/A2Pro staff has also
left Genie and is working with me there. We're building a thriving
Apple II community that's already about as active as Genie. By
working on Delphi, we're able to offer all the same things we used to
offer you here on Genie, but at a MUCH lower price, and on a service
with a future (which, it pains me to say it, Genie does not have).
You may think that you can't afford another service, and I can
sympathize with that, but Delphi is a LOT less expensive than Genie is
for most people--you can get unlimited use of every part of Delphi for
at little as $7 a month. And to be honest, I think you'll find the
future of Apple II support online will be on Delphi. We're working on
offline readers like CoPilot and GEM (and others for Mac and PC as
well as Apple II), we've taken much of the staff and many of the users
with us already--and we'd love for you to be a part.
I'm not pressuring you to leave Genie, but if you are leaving Genie, I
hope you'll consider joining us on Delphi. And if you aren't leaving
Genie, I encourage you to come join us over there anyway and give us a
chance to show you why it's a better home for Apple II support!
If you're interested in joining me and some of the other old friends
over there, I've included Delphi signup instructions at the end of
this letter. You can log on and go through the signup module for an
explanation of the various access plans, and if you don't see
something you like, you can just abort the signup process.
Please be aware--I no longer work for Genie. Delphi is in no way
affiliated with Genie. I just wanted to let you, an old Apple II
user, know that a new service supporting the Apple II is now here,
with better support, better prices, and most of the same faces you
probably remember from the past. We hope you'll consider joining us.
I'm signing off of Genie now, but if you'd like to ask me any
questions, or just drop me a note to say hi, write to me at
utter@delphi.com
