Re: ground

In response to article 32D4B0E5.395E@swbell.net">news:32D4B0E5.395E@swbell.net with th contents
and comments as noted - I'm certainly no NET GURU or any such thing but,
I'm on the NET ever day now and do a lot of uploads and downloads.
Concerning the Ground/apple2/1WSW folder contents...ref. URLS as follow;

ftp://128.255.21.234/2/apple2/1WSW/
http://128.255.21.234/2/apple2/1WSW/

(same is true with the following URL or any others)

http://wco.com/~3d5d1wsw/

(any shrinkit type archive file - using either; MAC, PC or UNIX systems)

may appear as a text file, but it's not. The shrinkit archive files are
all binary and should be treated as such when downloading them. I've
test downloaded each and every one of them in the past - with no
problems.

Using a Mac and Netscape to access either of the Ground URLS above and
others, the ftp shows the archives as generic white non-specific file
types. (all of them; .SHK, .SDK .BXY, .txt or whatever they be)

The http shows them all as text (txt) files, (all of them; .SHK, .SDK
BXY, .txt or whatever they be)

Downloading them via http or ftp with Netscape and the Mac, they are
indeed saved to my hard drive or to 3.5 disk, etc. as true ascii text
files. I have no problems unshrinking or unarchiving them to 3.5 ProDOS
disks (using Shrink II on the Mac) and then marching that disk over to
my IIGS and using the programs/applications or files.

I can also do the same with ftp using the Mac and an ftp program such as
Fetch, Archie, etc. Using Fetch, Archie, etc. I set the download to
binary first, then download; .SHK, .SDK or .BXY archives as binary and
they are saved to disk as such. No problem with unshrinking them or
unarchiving them, etc. as before with the Netscape method.

The archives (.SHK, .SDK and BXY) may appear as text files, using either
MAC, PC or UNIX, but rest assured - set your download software to binary
and download them as binary files - because that's what they are. And,
apperantly with a PC or UNIX system you need to do this to get them
transfered and downloaded properly for unshrinking, transfering them and
using them on your Apple II and IIGS systems. My only experiences is
with the MAC, so I really can't say what you problems might be using a
PC or UNIX system.

So, to sum it up with the use of a Mac, I can download them all in
either manner and use them all with no problems. No file type
conversions are needed and nothing is ever corrupt.

Other than the process outlined by Rubywand in the article posted
32D4B0E5.395E@swbell.net">news:32D4B0E5.395E@swbell.net

I have no knowledge of the proceedure for such Apple II/IIGS archive
downloads with a PC or UNIX system. I know many people have problems
with obtaining archives via http and/or ftp and they often seem to not
download properly for unshrinking and transfering to the Apple II and/or
IIGS.

I have seen some strange things with respect to archives that will
download properly one time - then the next time I download the same
archive, it appears t be corrupt. Then I'll try it again and it's just
fine. I'm not even going to speculate why this happens but it does - so
be it with the NET :(

I have no desire to use a PC or UNIX, as they are (for me at least) just
too complicated to use for obtaining Apple II and IIGS archives and then
transfering these to the Apple II or IIGS for dearchiving and use -
compared to my experience with the use of the MAC for such efforts. I'm
just an Apple fellow and nothing else! I do hope somebody that's a
skilled NET GURU (with all platforms and systems used) will try to give
an explaination - as to just what the problems others seem to have -
might be the result of.

Cheers
Dr. Tom
